It is nestled behind a tall, concrete fence which belies the lush gardens within. Within these walls, living alongside the bougainvillea and olive trees, is a community providing medical and holistic care to 180 people from all over Greece. The residents here live with paraplegia, quadriplegia, encephalopathies, multiple sclerosis and central nervous system disorders - but they also live with stories, music and song. In partnership with the Stegi - Onassis Foundation, Breakfast Club collaborated with Dimitris Sotiriou (dance), SWOP (sculpture/ architecture) Negros tou Moria (rap/ spoken word) and Marisha Triantafillidou (theatre) to celebrate the people and the environment of the Asilio Aniaton. We played music in the gardens, in the hallways, and by the bedside. We walked the neighbourhoods, exploring the surrounding areas and meeting the people who live and work there.&nbsp; From these experiences we crafted three performance events, weaving together folk music, stories, interviews, poetry, dance, improvised sound and contemporary music. Three streams of sound which moved our audience through the neighbourhood and interior of the Asilo. In companionship with our music, the artists and architects of the SWOP built incredible and beautiful sculptures around and within the buildings of the Asilo - mirrors that reflected the greenery, unexpected wall hangings, and beautified, neglected spaces. We were so incredibly lucky to work in partnership with the Melissa Network for Migrant Womean once more, working within their beutiful new space, the Beehive Gallery. Being surrounded by the deeply moving photography of Enri Canaj, which documents the migration trail towards Europe, reminded us of the power of art to move, to empower, to challenge and strengthen.&nbsp; We spent our time developing new ideas as well as preparing for a concert in order to celebrate the opening of this inspiring new space.&nbsp; We also had the wonderful opportunity to work with the Basil and Elise Goulandris Foundation to deliver two workshops within the Museum in downtown Athens - the first to preschoolers with pround physical disabilites and the second to carers and babies under the age of 6 months. Given that the four of us has our own extensive socially engaged community practice, it was a joy to come together to share our music with these groups and to connect together regardless of Thu, 25 Apr 2019 14:11:24 +0000 Breakfast Club https://breakfastclubquartet.co.uk/Melissa-Network-for-Migrant-Women-Athens The Melissa Network of Migrant Women Athens 2018 “It takes you inside... gives you direction but at the same time you don’t know where you are going... and it’s calming because you don’t need to worry about where it’s going...” Maria The Melissa Network of Migrant Women in Athens is an immensely powerful place. Open since the summer of 2015, the centre is a sanctuary for migrant and refugee women, and provides support through language classes, workshops and childcare. In partnership with the Greek National Opera, Breakfast Club spent five days in this incredibly special place. We were excited to continue to deepen our exploration of Maya Angelou’s poem, Phenomenal Woman, and conversations about womanhood, motherhood, love and loss then flowed between Greek, Farsi, Arabic and English. We shared songs and danced together as we discovered all of the things that connect and bind us regardless of our cultural backgrounds. In conjunction with the work with the women, we also worked with young musicians from the Greek National Opera Youth program. It felt so exciting to bring these two groups together for our final performance - to push the limits of 'opera' and redefine the lines between professional and non-professional musicians. Throughout the week we explored open scores by Pauline Oliveros, Meredith Monk and took inspiration from operatic arias and female characters. Alongside this we investigated personal stories, sharing our music with each other and finding meeting points between folk and traditional music and more experimental music making. The final performance was a reflection of the diversity of our experiences, and&nbsp; was pure joy as we performed as a collective and as a quartet. <img width="1600" height="1200" width_o="1600" partnership between The Barbican, the Museum of London, London Symphony Orchestra, the Guildhall School of Music and the City of London, which aims to celebrate this corner of City of London by animating the whole neighbourhood with imaginative events, activities and collaborations. As a part of the Culture Mile, Breakfast Club partnered with the Women for Refugee Women Centre (Moorgate) to create new music and share the stories and experiences of the women who use the centre. It was a complete joy to work with this inspiring group - together we explored what it means to take care of ourselves within the context of destitution. We were humbled by the group’s openess and willingness to be experiemental, playful and honest. Over the course of four days together, we created a concert filled with poetry, song, movement and texture. It’s a heady mix of old and new, where cultures from across the world meet and swirl and bubble. It has also become home for a portion of our quartet and, as such, we wanted to offer something to the community and to get to know it more intimately. We put a call out for singers and we met a couple of times in person, upstairs at the Denmark Arms pub. We were so lucky to have been able to meet even breifly face-to-face before being forced to re-locate online due to Covid-19.&nbsp; Undeterred, we continued to meet once per week to sing together and to find ways to remain connected as a group. The social importance of group music making is something that we already belive in deeply, and this time of forced isolation only served to deepen that beleif.
